When female shifter wolf Taryn Warner first encounters Trey Coleman, an alpha male wolf shifter with a dangerous reputation, she’s determined to resist his charms. After all, Trey—who was only fourteen when he defeated his own father in a duel, winning the right to be alpha of his pack—can’t have anything to offer the talented healer besides trouble, or so she thinks. Taryn finds herself drawn in by Trey’s forceful demeanor and artic-blue eyes, and she eventually agrees to enter an uneasy alliance with him. If the two succeed in convincing their respective packs that they’ve chosen each other as mates, Trey will win valuable political allies, while Taryn will escape an odious arranged mating.

But there are a lot potential pitfalls to this plan—including the very real possibility that the wolf shifters, overwhelmed by their growing attraction to each other, will be unable to maintain the clear heads needed to pull off the deception.

First and foremost, Taryn is a no-holds-barred alpha bitch that you can’t help but fall in love with. Outwardly, she is strong and determined. As an alpha, and the daughter of her pack’s alpha, she has had it ingrained into her, that to show any emotion other than control, is a weakness. As hard as she keeps most everyone at a distance, she still needs someone to keep all her pieces together.

Trey Coleman is not much different. Except for his anger issues. Taryn has some as well, but Trey tends to go feral when he gets in the red zone—literally.

Both are in a precarious situation. Taryn with a potentially dangerous mating opportunity; dangerous to her physical and mental well-being. And Trey is in danger of letting down his pack and losing everything he has worked incredibly hard to build. Trey thinks he has found a way to benefit the both of them.  A fake mating. What could go wrong???

It is a constant game of tug-o-war between Trey and Taryn. It is hot from the moment they meet and only escalades as their relationship progresses. Taryn may be tough and possess a wit that can give the most practiced whiplash. She essentially balances out Trey. She is the tenderness that he is lacking in his life. Although ‘tenderness’ isn’t a word that I would immediately think of when picturing Taryn.

Don’t get me wrong, she is compassionate and loyal to a fault. But the girl knows how to be an alpha.

I really enjoyed experiencing their relationship as it developed.

Most of the other members of the pack are only touched on briefly, enough to entice the reader to continue the series as each subsequent book focuses on a different member. Enough was said that you got a pretty good feel for the pack dynamic and different personalities.

The one negative critique I have is a personal annoyance. The redundancy of Trey’s and Taryn’s inner turmoil. Not that their issues need to be stated only once, they just seemed to be repeated excessively. We get it, Trey doesn’t know love; Taryn can’t show weakness or vulnerability (yes, there is a difference). I found myself skimming a few paragraphs here and there because I was getting déjà vu.

Truth be told, I have read this book more than a few times. And each time I love it as much as the first read.

If you like alpha versus alpha, steamy romance, I would highly recommend this.
